A woman was shot and killed at an apartment building in North Austin: APD

On Saturday morning, a woman was shot and killed in an apartment building in North Austin.

Another person was shot and killed in an apartment just ten minutes away, 24 hours before this one. There have been a lot of deaths in the city this week.

Austin Police say that just after 4 a.m. on November 16, Austin 911 got calls about gunshots at the Espero Rutland apartment complex, which is in the 1900 block of Rutland Drive near Metric Boulevard.

After about five minutes, police arrived and found a woman inside one of the flats who had been shot. The woman died at the scene of the accident, even though people tried to save her life.

APD says that they are looking at video footage and talking to other people in the area to try to find a suspect. It is thought that this is a one-time event and that there is no longer a threat to the public.

The shooting death on Saturday is being looked into as Austin’s 62nd murder of 2024. It was this week that FOX 7 Austin talked to APD Chief Lisa Davis about the murders.

“You’re looking in Austin, prior to 2020, I believe it was the norm to have 25 homicides a year, so to go up from 25 to 30 homicides to most likely will end at 70 for the year, that’s a concern,” Davis said.

Call Crime Stoppers at 512-472-TIPS (512-472-4477) or the APD Homicide Unit Tip Line at 512-974-TIPS (512-974-8477) if you know anything about this death.

As part of the city’s plan to help homeless people, the building where the shooting took place opened in February. The Austin Housing Finance Corporation (AHFC) built its first permanent rental neighborhood for people who need help.
